Cro & Kow video + photo production studio

We’re based at the Shore in Leith, in Edinburgh, Scotland. In our comfy & well equipped studio there’s a seemingly endless supply of coffee and chocolate biscuits.

We originally come from a photography background, but film making has become an increasingly important part of what we do, and nowadays we’re making video films and taking stills too, sometimes working together to do both seamlessly alongside. We’re a tight knit and friendly team, which comes in handy when we can communicate simply by wiggling an eyebrow or an ear. A happy crew makes for a fresh and innovative approach. At the core of our team is Sylwia & Simon. Sylwia’s surname “Kowalczyk” presented a bit of a spelling challenge for some people Googling our surnames, so to make life simpler we founded “Cro & Kow”.

To keep the very best quality for our clients we’re keeping up with the latest equipment, and an in-house stable of the latest Sony fx6 and fx3 cameras as well as an array of stills cameras, Aputure lights, and latest gen Mix-Pre audio recorders.

Clients include such gorgeous people as NHS Lothian Charity, The Telegraph magazine, Ferg & Harris, Whyte & McKay/Fettercairn, FT Weekend Magazine, the Economist's 1848 (Intelligent Life) magazine, The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Der Spiegel, the Financial Times, The Fader magazine, 11 Freunde, Bloomberg's Capital Markets magazine, Fettes College, Everychild charity, Znak Publishing, Yachting Monthly, and Yachting World among many others.

Meet our core team

Sylwia Kowalczyk is the creative force behind Cro & Kow. Some say she reads too many books, which give her an almost scary number of ideas. She’s a photographer & filmmaker, and her original background with a Masters in graphic design (as well as photography) from Krakow Academy of Fine Arts helps bring that clean modern aesthetic and an eye for the final layout to Cro & Kow. Oh, and mustn’t forget she did an MFA in photography at Edinburgh College of Art too.

Sylwia has a buzzing practise as an artist, where she uses a mix of collage, photography, paper sculpture and projection to create artworks that have been shown in galleries around the world. Her favourite pastime is entertaining a small dachshund, as well as any other dog who happens to cross her path.

Simon Crofts is our director of photography when it comes to filming, and is also an established photographer. His thing has been Ukraine, which he even photographed (& wrote) a book about which was published by the excellent German publisher, Kehrer Verlag and exhibited in some nice places, notably Rotterdam’s Kunsthal. He has been known to gabble in Russian (but sadly hasn't learned Ukrainian - yet).

Apart from occasionally helping Sylwia to chase that dachshund, his favourite thing is sitting on a boat either being pushed around by the wind or sipping something warming at anchor in a remote bay.
